Fun Things to Do in the Berkshires and Great Barrington, MA

While we’ve touched briefly on a couple of these topics in the past, such as with our look at how you should spend your mid-summer break, we wanted to give you some more detailed information on some of our favorite things to do in the Great Barrington, Massachusetts, area. There are so many fun things to do here in town and throughout the Berkshires as a whole, but below you can read about some of the activities that are widely considered musts for any visit to the area.

Visit the Norman Rockwell Museum

In case you aren’t sure who Norman Rockwell is, he was a famous American painter and illustrator who lived from the late 1800s through the late 1970s. Some of Rockwell’s most famous works include cover illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, illustrations for dozens of books including Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and even painting presidential portraits. The Norman Rockwell Museum is one of the most well-respected and renowned art museums in the country, including nearly 1,000 original pieces of art and over 100,000 personal items such as photographs and letters.

Hike the Appalachian Trail

If you’re a fan of hiking, there are plenty of trails found throughout the Berkshires. But the Appalachian Trail is one of the most famous trails in the country. The entirety of the trail extends from Mount Katahdin in Maine through 14 states and over 2,000 miles to Springer Mountain in Georgia. This includes a stretch through Massachusetts and, in particular, through the Berkshires. You can visit trails right here in Great Barrington and in nearby areas to say you conquered at least one section of this famous trail!

Attend the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center

While there are plenty of theaters, stages and performance spaces throughout the Berkshires, such as Tanglewood which we’ve already touched on, there is only one major space right here in Great Barrington, and that’s the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. Here you can attend all sorts of events, from musical concerts to film screenings to stage performances.
