Waupaca, WI waterfront cottage makeover before and after

There are entire television channels dedicated to home makeovers - everyone loves a before and after. Sometimes the most impactful change to a space can be more of a make under. Paring things down and streamlining can allow the home’s structure and setting to shine. When we purchased our Cottage on Beasley Lake in Waupaca, WI, we fell in love with its rustic Chain O’ Lakes cottage feel and immaculate lakefront views. However, we wanted to elevate the space and give it a cleaner design that celebrated its surrounding natural beauty. The before and after photos below truly speak for themselves.

Before

The finishes and appliances at the cottage were quite dated pre-renovation. Each room contained different colors and textures across every surface. Many of the rooms felt disjointed and claustrophobic due to unnecessary walls. Our goal was to open up the space and replicate the airy feel of the environment surrounding the home.

After

Walls came down, fresh, light paint was added and cohesive furnishings filled the cottage. One of the most noteworthy updates to the home was building out a screened-in porch to ensure the space could be enjoyed on both sunny and rainy days. The basement was also transformed into a mudroom with stand-up showers for quick rinse offs after a day on the lake. We also added a bunk room and bedroom to the basement for overflow sleeping. Extensive landscaping and a custom fire pit transformed the backyard so passersby on boats could see the home in its full glory from the lake.

While some may argue that our cottage got a makeover, we feel as though simplifying and streamlining the design was the make under the home needed and deserved. Still warm and rustic with its exceptional lake views and antique accents, the cottage is a welcoming space intended for relaxing and unplugging.
